Each year a new musical
movement appears on the international scene and make people dance in
every club all over the planet. Barcelona, Spain based DJ Dirty Crooner
does not belong to that type of disposable new musical movements.
Probably because the music played by Dirty Crooner does not belong to
time. It belongs to universe. Rather... it belongs to universality.
That's the reason why this music has been making people - all people
without any distinction - dance since 1970. All over the world. No
matter if you are black, white, red or green, you have loved the groovy
sounds of jazz funk soul blaxploitation tunes played by Dirty Crooner.
From the 8 minutes Fender Rhodes jazzy solo, on the semi cosmic funk
base rythm of Frank Strazzeri's "Cloudburst" to screaming Hammond B3 of
Jeremy Steig, you simply can not resist moving your feet...!!
So rather than long sentence, here are some names - just a few names -
to tell you exactly what Dirty Crooner is made of.
These should normally ring
some bells :
Willie Hutch
Foxie Brown
Mavis Staples
Minnie Ripperton
Issac Hayes
Bobby Womack
Black Caesar
Cleopatra Jones
Kelle Patterson
The Isley Brothers
Rythm Makers
Curtis Mayfield
Coffy
.....
Dirty Crooner's father - named Christian - was a real aficionado of 70's
music, mostly French and Italian movie soundtracks. Some of his records
have gone through time and are still securely locked in his house, in
the region of Normandy, France, close to the city of Rouen. After
spending his young age in the mountains close to Nimes, in Southern
France, and in Dieppe, Normandy, Dirty Crooner moved to Paris when he
was 14. At 17, while still in high school, his love for 70's music starts with 60's-70's
mythical rock bands. But Dirty Crooner needs more... At age 19, he
starts a collaboration at Olivier Cachin's "L'affiche", the French
leading paper magazine for "Black Musics of All Genres". He proposes and
produces the "Blaxploitation Chronicles" within the magazine. It's
during this period of time that he will gain knowledge of Blaxploitation
and Soul Jazz Funk 70's american artists. He will also get to see over
40 blaxploitation movies, all from 1970 to 1977. Actually, most of the
titles played by Dirty Crooner have been released during these years.
Dirty Crooner starts DJing his records in 1995 but when he first gets
online in 1997, his vision radically changes : he will be a 100% digital
DJ! First mixing on independant softwares, he will spend a lot of his
money encoding all his records. He will also spend huge amount of time
at the early days of Napster.com, downloading more and more songs. "In
1997-1998, absolutely EVERYTHING was available on Napster! I have been
able to find some rarities which are still impossible to find nowadays.
I might be the only owner of these worldwide! Anyway, it was a GREAT
time!".
In 1999, while still digitally djing on the first ever version of DSS
DJ, he gets to know Patrick Ottawan and will tour with him during a
year, mostly in Europe and Eastern Europe. Ottawan was one of the late
70's international Soul Disco artist produced by Carrere Music and
Daniel Vangarde, father of one of Daft Punk members, Thomas Bangalter.
"Touring with Ottawan was amazing! The guy has been touring for 30 years
worldwide and still is incredible on stage". For the record, Ottawan
sold over 8 millions discs between 1979 and 1983.
Nowadays, Dirty Crooner has moved to Spain and is touring and mixing
more than he ever did. He currently uses a Dell containing over 6 gigs
of Pure 70's Jazz Funk Soul Blaxploitation Tunes. He mixes either on DSS
DJ 5.5 - even though their latest version still has a few bugs! - or on
ClubDJ Pro 2, probably one of the best software out there. Dirty Crooner
can also be accompanied by Dirty Crooner VJ, playing mostly
Blaxploitation movies for an astonishing "eyes&ears" show!
Dirty Crooner is probably one of the most down to earth person you will
ever meet and is always willing to go out, party and meet new people,
wherever he plays. He enjoys life to its fullest and try to make it - as
long as it is humanly possible - funky!
